Our mission
We all want to give our children the best: That means designing not only for their health and wellbeing, but also the planet they will grow up on. Our product and production chain are built around and environmental and social mission that guides every decision we make.
Our environmental mission is to create clean products throughout their entire life cycle, from early production to end of use. Most importantly, the product must be safe and clean for your baby. caramma ensures that no harmful materials such as microplastics, BPA, or hormone-disrupting substances reach your baby.
Our social mission is to open honest conversations about breastfeeding and raise awareness of the challenges that more than half of all women experience. We want to break the taboos around struggle and loneliness, and help create a shared, supportive space for families navigating these difficulties.
Circular design principles
As the first step in our strategy and action plan, we present the circular design principles we have applied in creating a responsible product chain. These principles define a product’s point of departure in relation to production, consumption, and afterlife, with a focus on avoiding resource waste and introducing a product into the world that creates positive change for people.
A product that makes a difference
The caramma support bottle is designed to make a change to a widespread health problem that in addition to health risks has huge emotional consequences for millions of parents every day.
Design in clean materials
All parts of the bottle are made of clean materials: There is no print, no color and no surface-treated parts, so no chemical substances enter the product. This means that the individual material parts are clean and can be separated into mono-materials so they can be sorted and recycled separately. When the product is in use, the silicone seals of any plastic parts, preventing your baby to receive any microplastic from the bottle.
Design for minimal transport
The caramma support bottle is flexible and designed to fold in the middle, so it can deflate and contain zero air. Therefore the baby bottles can be stacked in half-circles in bulk with no air in between during transportation. The tight stacking optimise shipping and minimise greenhouse gas emissions during transportation.
Design for adaptability
The caramma support bottle design makes it possible for your baby to get the milk in their personal and natural pace. We have developed a patented "one size fits all" milk flow control. The milk flow is controlled by your baby's sucking strength which is different to many other feeding bottles on the market where a fixed hole size controls the flow rate. That's why you don't have to change hole size according to age or buy different ones to try them out.
Design for durability
We encourage everyone who has a caramma support bottle to disinfect their bottle and pass it on to another baby when you are finished using it. We have among other good reasons chosen silicone as the material for our bottle, to give it a long life, and make it possible to separate it into easily cleanable components for easy disinfection.
Materials
It is a great focus for us to keep the materials in our production clean and as harmless for you and your baby as possible.
Silicone
PP
Production
The caramma support bottle and nipple are made of silicone. Silicone is 100% free of microplastics as well as other harmful and hormone-disrupting ingredients such as BPA and phthalates. In addition, the silicone contains no nitrosamines (such as are found in natural rubber). While natural rubber has a limited durability, silicone does not expire. Because silicone has a very high heat tolerance and is extremely durable it can last during frequent sterilisation. Silicone mainly consists of silica (sand), which is not a scarce resource, and at the same time it can be recycled 100% at selected recycling sites.
The lid and the two threads that hold the bottle together are made of PP. PP is free of BPA, PVC and phthalates, and can be 100% recycled. But, like every sort of plastic, it contains microplastic, and that is why the bottle is designed so that no plastic gets in contact with the milk of your baby. The silicone seals the plastic closing from within, making it possible for your baby to drink milk 100% free of microplastic.
The caramma support bottle is produced locally: the silicone is produced just south of the Danish border in Germany, the nipple in France and our plastic parts are produced in an old Danish family factory in the island of Funen.
Afterlife
The caramma support bottle is designed in order to best comply with the hierarchy for a responsible afterlife. The first priority is to sterilize and reuse the bottle as it is. The second priority is to replace parts of it and then reuse it, and the third priority is to separate it into mono-materials and recycle them. If you don't know what to do with your support bottle after you are done using it, we are happy to receive used bottles, so we ensure the most optimal afterlife based on the condition of the bottle and the options available.
-
Reuse
We encourage everyone with our baby bottle to pass it on to someone else when you are done using it. One of the reasons of why we have chosen silicone is due to its long lifespan. Every component in the bottle can be disassembled for easy disinfection.
-
Changing parts
The nipple heads should be replaced if it is visibly broken but can be replaced separately to give the bottle new life. Because the milk flow with our patented system is controlled by your babys sucking strength, the choice of nipple head is solely ergonomical.
-
Recycle
There is no print on the bottle, no color in the silicone and no surface-treated parts. This means that no chemical substances enter the production and product. Also, it means that the individual material parts are "clean" and can be sorted and recycled separately.
Goals
Even though we have made a big effort to build up our company with responsibility in the centre from the beginning, we will continuously have goals to reach. Both the ecological and social challenges we are striving to contribute positively to, are complex challenges that we will never finish to become better at. Therefore, we see it as our most important mission to stay humble and ambitious to keep improving. We do that through our direct engagement of the newest research, experts, healthcare professionals and parents, as we have done from the very beginning - because we deeply believe this is how the best solutions are reached.
